Holy Heroes In Our Midst
Sunday, January 29, 2-5 pm
Solanus Casey Center, 1780 Mount Elliott Street, Detroit
In honor of Black History Month, and in celebration of our 10th anniversary as a spirituality center nourishing the souls of all Christians, the Solanus Casey Center is hosting “Holy Heroes in our Midst” Sunday January 29th from 2-5. The Solanus Casey Center is located at 1780 Mt. Elliott Ave here in Detroit, and is part of the Capuchin Ministries.
At the event we will be honoring the legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. whose life size statue is included among the “Beatitude” figures here at the Center. We will also be reflecting on the life of Rosa Parks, and Father Solanus Casey, and the contribution that each one gave to helping us live more heroically the demands of Christian virtue in the following of Christ.
Nationally known speaker, and civil rights activist Dr. William Anderson will speak of his own history of working with Dr. King as well as the legacy of Rosa Parks. Fr. Matthew Gottchalk, a Capuchin Friar from Milwaukee Wisconsin whose life has been dedicated to the Black community, will share his own insights from his involvement with the civil rights struggle as well as the Capuchin perspective of the dignity of each person as seen in the person and ministry of Fr. Solanus Casey. A period of discussion will be included.
We would hope that you might invite your own Church and community contacts to join with us in this opportunity to gather, reflect on and celebrate these historic figures.
Refreshments will be available along with the opportunity to spend time exploring the Center. Tickets are not necessary, but if you are bringing a larger group it would be helpful to call 313-579-2100 ext. 130. There will be an opportunity for a free will offering.
